Injured employee rescued by crane at the Cargill plant in Gainesville

An accident at the Cargill plant earlier today required the daring rescue of an employee. An employee was working on top of a silo when he fell and struck an object in his abdomen.

Emergency crews, both firefighters from the Gainesville Fire Department and Hall County Med 21 personnel, had to go on top of the silo to assess the patient’s injuries. According to Keith Smith, Division Chief for the Gainesville Fire Department, they determined the patient needed medical attention. In order to get him down safely, they used a crane that was on site. The patient was put into the crane's basket and lowered to the ground. From there he was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The employee’s injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
