Baseball roundup: Jefferson, Bears, Trojans, Panthers all take big region wins

JEFFERSON — Matthew Perrin stroked a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to provide the only runs of the game as Class 4A No. 6 Jefferson held off Chestatee 2-0 on Friday in Region 8-4A action.

The Dragons (11-4, 6-0 Region 8-4A) completed their second straight region sweep with the win, and all have been by shutout.

Cole Watkins started and went six innings allowing just a pair of Nolan Turner singles. He fanned six and walked three to get the win.

However, the War Eagles (6-10, 0-6 Region 8-4A) had their chances. They stranded four runners, three in scoring position and two at third base, but could not get the big hit.

Jase People pitched the final inning for Jefferson to earn the save.

Turner started for Chestatee and lasted 5 1/3 innings scattering eight hits while striking out two. Hunter Potzner got the final two outs, including one strikeout.

Perrin and J. J. Rapp each had two hits for Jefferson. Watkins, Mason Cooper, Nick Sellers, and People all had one hit each for the Dragons.


CHEROKEE BLUFF 4,
WEST HALL 0

Chandler Shope and Braxton Beal combined on a three-hitter and struck out 11 to lead the fourth-ranked Bears to a big Region 7-3A series win over the Spartans. 

The Bears won the final two games of the series after dropping the opener on Monday.

Bluff (10-4, 2-1 Region 7-3A) scored three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run single from Bryce England. The Bears added a run in the fifth on an England RBI double.

West Hall (11-5, 4-2 Region 7-3A) mustered just three singles from Tyler Maynard, Ryan Svetz, and Jace Young but left six on base. The Spartans stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the fifth and another in the seventh as they could not scratch across a run.

Kyle Murphy went the distance for West Hall allowing four runs on 10 hits while fanning six.

Both teams will continue their 7-3A schedules on Monday. West Hall will travel to Gilmer to open a series while the Bears will play host to Lumpkin County.


NORTH HALL 15,
LUMPKIN COUNTY 1 (6 inn)

The Class 3A second-ranked Trojans completed a three-game sweep of the Indians on the road.

The win kept North Hall  (11-3, 6-0 Region 7-3A) atop the region standings with White County right behind.

Landon Lee and Hunter Brooks scattered three hits and fanned 10 batters combined on the mound for North Hall.

Luke Erickson drove in four runs to pace the Trojans' offense. Cooper Helton and Jace Bowen had three hits apiece and combined for five RBI. Grayson Kirby two hits and two RBI for North Hall.

Harper Davenport, Hunter Cooper, and Payton Wood had the three hits for the Indians (4-10, 0-6 Region 7-3A).

North Hall will open a huge three-game series with White County on Monday at Lynn Cottrell Field.

Lumpkin County heads to Cherokee Bluff on Monday to open a series.


JACKSON COUNTY 15
JOHNSON 0

The Panthers ran their win streak to 11 straight and stayed tied for the lead atop Region 8-5A with a dominating win over the Knights in Oakwood.

Jackson County (13-3, 2-0 Region 8-5A) jumped on Johnson quickly with a four-run first inning and added two more in the third, one each in the fourth and sixth innings, and invoked the run-rule with seven runs in the top of the seventh.

Spencer Muffuletto, Justin Ethridge, Sam Bradley, and Nicholas Streuer all had two hits for the Panthers. Ethridge and Bradley combined for six RBI while Streuer had one RBI. Bradley Pruiett drove in three runs and Phillip Glander had a hit and two RBI for Jackson County.

Hayden Gregory got the win scattering three hits and striking out seven in six innings.

Cole Farmer, Peyton Lavergne, and Joshua Lopez had Johnson's three hits.


COMMERCE 7,
WASHINGTON-WILKES 0

The Tigers also ran their win streak to 11 with a Region 8-A Public win on the road.

Will Slater went 6 1/3 innings scattering four hits and fanning eight to get the win as sixth-ranked Commerce (12-2, 7-0 Region 8-A Public) remained atop the region standings

Kane Goldman had two hits and two RBI to lead a 10-hit Tigers attack. Matt Martin, Gray Holbrook, and Colin Welch each had two hits and one RBI for the Tigers.


MADISON COUNTY 13-7,
EAST HALL 5-2

The Vikings dropped a doubleheader to the Red Raiders on Friday in Danielsville.

In the first game, Madison County used a seven-run second inning to blow it open and led 12-2 in the fourth.

East Hall scored two runs in each of the third and fourth and a run in the seventh.

Zach Kinsey had three hits, Enrique Medina two hits and one RBI, and Mikey Parker, Kole Buffington, and Luke England each had one hit for the Vikings.

England took the loss allowing 12 runs in five innings.

In the second game, Madison County used a three-run first inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead and then held off the Vikings from there.

Christian McCullough started for East Hall and went 4 2/3 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and walking six. Kinsey went the final 1 1/3 yielding two runs on two hits and fanning four.

 McCullough had a hit and an RBI with Cooper Williamson, Luke Barton, and Kinsey all having one hit for the Vikings.
