Deputies charge two with conspiracy to commit murder in Habersham County assault

CLARKESVILLE – Further investigation of this week’s aggravated assault at a home outside Clarkesville has prompted conspiracy to commit murder charges against two men as the victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Salvador Villagomez, 26, of Fort Worth, Texas, initially was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery in the incident, and now faces the additional charge, said Habersham County Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Wurtz.

Additionally, Jesus Antonio Melchor-Rodriguez, 24, of Jonesboro faces one count of conspiracy to commit murder in relation to the incident, Wurtz said. That warrant remains outstanding because Melchor-Rodriguez is not currently in custody.

The assault happened at 270 Faye Potts Road, Clarkesville, and resulted in life-threatening injuries to the female victim, who has not been named yet.

“As far as I know, she was struck with a blunt object about the head and face area multiple times,” Wurtz said.Wurtz said officials are unable to release full details of the incident at this time, pending the arrest and interview of Melchor-Rodriguez and any resulting follow-up.

“It’s gotten a lot more complicated than the surface seems,” Wurtz said.

Wurtz said the case still involves several unknowns.

“These two guys that were acquaintances somehow or another conspired together to murder the young lady that was injured the other day and is still in the hospital in critical condition. What we’re trying to investigate now is why this was all done, what are all the background factors, who all else was involved – if there was anybody else involved – and why this all played out like it did. There’s a lot more to the story and we need to find out what it all is.”

Wurtz said Villagomez has given a couple of different addresses.

“From what I can gather, he has been here in the Clarkesville area for a little while anyway, but he is still giving a Fort Worth address as his home of residence, but he is also giving a Clarkesville address as the residence that he’s been staying at since he’s been here,” Wurtz said.

Wurtz said the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming in upcoming days.
