It's about getting out the vote

By Martha Zoller Host, Morning Talk

We’ve already talked about the 500,000 GOP voters who voted on November 3 but not on January 5 and the 150,000 Democrat voters who voted on November 3 and not January 5. We have enough registered GOP voters to win, but will they come out if Trump is not on the ticket? We are not sure.

So what’s a gal to do? Kelly Loeffler, who accomplished more in a year in the U. S. Senate than most achieve in a full term, has started a group called Greater Georgia. While we in the GOP have been watching Stacy Abrams register voters for 6 years, the GOP has been slow on the uptake of acting in an organized way on it.

Twenty-five years ago, I had a lunch with a top GOPer and he said, “Republicans write their last check on Thursday and then go to vote on Tuesday and we’ve got to change that.” We haven’t done much to change that. Local GOP groups talk about voter registration, but it doesn’t move the needle because the “meeting” structure leans toward the older members of the party (like me) and not the younger ones we need to recruit and reach.

Fair Fight Action and Fair Fight Georgia worked in tandem with the Georgia Democratic Party. The Democratic party structure has the same problem as the Georgia GOP structure. There is no excitement. In the Democrats case, the excitement was generated by the infrastructure that Fair Fight created. We don’t have to have our own ideas on getting out the vote, we can do what the Democrats did and have an organization that will create the infrastructure we need to register and get people out to vote. Greater Georgia can do that.

Our ideas are better. Most Georgians and Americans believe the GOP is best to manage the economy, our security and our schools and we used to be fiscally responsible and we can get back to that, but that’s a topic for another column. If we message that, we will win. Here’s my advice. Get your message together, be a happy warrior and when attacked, answer the attack and then pivot to your message on issues. Oh, and help Greater Georgia get their movement of voter registration and motivation to the goal line which is successful GOP elections.
