Brandon Overton led flag-to-flag en route to the win in Saturday night’s 19th annual March Madness race at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, South Carolina to open the 38th racing season for the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series.
The Evans, Georgia racer was fastest in qualifying and won his heat race, earning the right to lead the field to the green flag for the 60-lap feature.
Overton jumped out to the early lead, with Zack Mitchell, Blairsville, Georgia’s Jonathan Davenport and Jimmy Owens staying in his tracks for the first part of the race.
As the field approached the half way mark, the car of Dustin Mitchell slowed on the track with mechanical issues to bring out the first caution of the night.
As the race reached the 30 lap mark, Overton was still leading, but Davenport had moved to second, with Mitchell third and Owens still in fourth. With 7 laps remaining, Owens slipped around Mitchell to pick up third.
With four laps to go, Bryson Harper brought out the final caution due to a flat tire, bunching up the field for a three lap shootout.
Davenport tried to overtake Overton on the restart, but could not overtake make the move as Overton went on to take the win.
