Clarkesville woman killed in three-car crash in White County

A Clarkesville woman was killed, and a Clarkesville man was injured in a three-vehicle wreck in front of Jacky Jones Ford south of Cleveland Monday afternoon.

Peggy Lovell, 88, died in the crash that occurred just before 2:30 p.m., according to Cpl. Bronson Taylor of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville.

A 1997 Ford Thunderbird driven by Lovell was traveling east out of 2742 U.S. 129, Jacky Jones Ford dealership, behind a 2010 Ford Focus driven by Henry Hebron Lovell, 91, of Clarkesville, Taylor said.

H. Lovell’s car stopped, waiting for traffic to clear before entering U.S. 129/Ga. 11 when the front of Peggy Lovell’s car struck the rear of it, Taylor said.

After impact, H. Lovell’s car traveled across the highway and came to rest in the right turn lane, while Peggy Lovell’s car traveled out into the highway and was struck by a southbound 2007 Freightliner CMV driven by Doyle Simmons, 51, of Cleveland, Taylor said.

The front of the Freightliner truck struck the driver side of Peggy Lovell’s Thunderbird, causing it to spin and come to rest facing north on the shoulder of the highway in front of the dealership. She died of her injuries.

Henry Hebron Lovell complained of minor injury and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Neither Simmons nor his passenger, 33-year-old Bradley Barron of Cumming, was injured.

No charges will be filed, according to Taylor.
