Habersham County man charged in child pornography case

By AccessWDUN Staff

A Habersham County man was arrested Thursday after an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation into allegations that he possessed child pornography.

According to a press release from the GBI, the GBI's Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit (CEACC) and the Habersham County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at 36-year-old Brenton Lee Lawson's home in Mount Airy on Thursday.

Lawson was arrested and charged with three counts of Possession of Child Pornography and one count of Possession of Methamphetamine as a result of the execution of the search warrant. Lawson was booked into the Habersham County Jail.

The release says an investigation into Lawson's online activity by the GBI's CEACC Unit began after a report was received from the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) regarding Lawson potentially possessing child pornography.

This investigation is part of a continuing effort by the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, which is a part of the GBI's CEACC Unit. The ICAC Task Force is working to identify those involved in the trade of child pornography and the online sexual exploitation of children.

According to the release, the ICAC Program was created in response to the increasing number of children using the internet, the proliferation of child pornography and increasing online activity by predators.

Anyone with information about this case or any other cases of child exploitation is asked to contact the Georgia Burea of Investigation Computer Crimes and Child Exploitation Unit at 404-270-8870.
