Girls basketball: LCA claims region title; Branch holds off East Hall in regular season finale

FLOWERY BRANCH — The Lanier Christian Academy girls claimed a region title with a 41-35 over Westminster on Friday at home.

LCA used a stellar defensive performace allowing no more than 9 points in any quarter. The Lady Lightning led 12-9 after the opening frame and took a 22-18 lead into halftime. They extended the lead to 32-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

Lexie Robertson paced the Lady Lightning with 11 points and 7 rebounds; Hollie Beussee added 7 points with 5 assists, including a pair of clutch free throws late in the game to help seal the win. Reece Montgomery had a strong night with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Shyla Sheffield had 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals for LCA.

The Lady Lightning will open the playoffs on Tuesday against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.


FLOWERY BRANCH 43,
EAST HALL 40

The Lady Falcons and East Hall closed out the regular season in Region 8-4A at the East Hall gym.

The win for Flowery Branch (10-13, 7-5 Region 8-4A) pulled them into a three-way tie for second place with Cedar Shoals and North Oconee. The loss East Hall (15-9, 6-6 Region 8-4A) dropped the Lady Vikings into fifth place heading into next week's region tournament.

Branch opened the game with an 11-7 run and eventually took a 24-17 lead into the intermission. The Lady Falcons maintained its lead heading into the fourth with a 32-25 advantage.

East Hall rallied in the fourth quarter to get within one possession on several occasions but Branch was able to hang on for the win.

Shaina Kriews paced the Lady Falcons with 14 points. Bella Brick added 12 and Morgan Aguilar had 8 for Flowery Branch.
