Keep Hall Beautiful has "successful year" during pandemic

Keep Hall Beautiful still had a successful 2020 even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Shanda Sexton, executive director of the organization unveiled at a Gainesville City Council Work Session Thursday.

Sexton presented statistics from the organization’s initiatives last year during the work session, showing just how much litter and recyclable materials were collected during 2020.

Keep Hall Beautiful had a total of 28,918 community service hours in 2020, of those, 7,229 occurred within Gainesville city limits, according to Sexton.

About 13,000 pounds of recyclable materials were picked up by Keep Hall Beautiful from roadsides and shorelines. 2,250 pounds of recyclable materials were picked up within Gainesville city limits.

97,516 pounds of litter and waste were picked up off roadsides and shorelines in Hall County, while 16,283 pounds of that was picked up by Keep Hall Beautiful within Gainesville city limits.

Lastly, Sexton said Keep Hall Beautiful cleaned a total of 423 miles worth of roadsides in 2020, with 181 of those miles being within Gainesville city limits.

“It was a pretty successful year considering what we have been through,” said Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan following the presentation.

Keep Hall Beautiful was still able to hold a few events in 2020, including a virtual Earth Day event.

“We had a lot of participation through Facebook with that one; people posting things where they were able to get out and do their own little cleanups in their neighborhood, social distancing,” Sexton said
