Girls basketball roundup: Dawson, Jefferson, Branch, LCA get region wins

FLOWERY BRANCH — Dawson County’s Maddie Anglin scored 18 points to lead the Lady Tigers to a big 44-38 road win over Cherokee Bluff on Tuesday in Region 7-3A action.

Anglin also hit the 1,000-point plateau as well in the victory for Dawson County (12-11, 4-7 Region 7-3A), which has won three of its last four games. Bluff (6-17, 1-9 Region 7-3A) has lost three straight.

Taylor Click paced the Lady Bears with 11 points. Timber Gaither had 10 points for Cherokee Bluff.

The Lady Bears will close out their regular season on Friday on the road against Gilmer. Dawson County travels to West Hall on Friday in its regular-season finale.


FLOWERY BRANCH 69,
MADISON COUNTY 41

Flowery Branch followed up its upset win over No. 1 Jefferson last week with a solid defensive effort en route to another big Region 8-4A road win on Tuesday night.

The Lady Falcons  (8-12, 5-4 Region 8-4A) opened the game with a 20-4 first-quarter run and never looked back. They led 31-15 at halftime and extended the lead to 52-30 heading into the fourth quarter.

Bella Brick led Flowery Branch with 20 points. Ashlee Locke added 17 points and Shaina Kriews had 15 for the Lady Falcons.

Flowery Branch climbed into fourth place in the region with the win and next will play host to Cedar Shoals on Friday. A win over the Lady Jaguars would push them into third with one game left in the regular season.


SOUTH FORSYTH 49,
GAINESVILLE 44

The Lady War Eagles used a 23-9 second-half run to overcome a first-half deficit in taking a Region 6-7A win over the Lady Red Elephants.

Gainesville (12-10, 2-8 Region 6-7A) saw its two-game win streak snapped with the loss. The Lady Red Elephants led most of the way through the first three quarters.

Gainesville opened with a 10-7 first quarter and extended the lead to 23-16 by halftime on the strength of forcing 13 South Forsyth turnovers.

The Lady Red Elephants led 29-21 midway through the third quarter before the Lady War Eagles (18-4, 7-3 Region 6-7A) finally got going.

South Forsyth closed out the third quarter with a 13-5 run to tie the game and then used a 12-2 spurt to open the fourth quarter to put the game away. Gainesville did close out the game with a 7-1 run but could not get closer than 48-44 with just 6 seconds left.

Lauren Teasley paced Gainesville with 15 points and added 5 rebounds. Keke Jones and Sadie Roach each had 9 points for the Lady Red Elephants. Terry Pittman had 4 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Clara Morris poured in 16 points for South Forsyth, with 13 coming in the second-half comeback. Jadyn Kniceley had 13 points, 8 in the fourth quarter, for the Lady War Eagles.


JEFFERSON 77,
EAST HALL 39

The Lady Dragons shook off their first region loss last week with a big road win in Region 8-4A play.

Jefferson (17-4, 9-1 Region 8-4A) had five players score in double figures.

Courtney Kidd led the way with 18 points. Ellie Kinlaw had 16 points, Allianne Clark 14 points, Deshona Gaither 11 points, and Livi Blackstock 10 points for the Lady Dragons.


LANIER CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 51,
HORIZON CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 17

The Lady Lightning stayed undefeated with a big at home on Tuesday.

LCA put on another superb defensive display early holding Horizon scoreless in the opening period while running out to a 10-0 lead. The Lady Lightning led 28-8 by halftime.

Shyla Sheffield led with 13 points and 8 steals. Ashley Avery added 12 points and 2 steals, Lexie Robertson contributed 9 points and 3 assists, and Reece Montgomery had 5 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals. 

Hollie Beussee had 5 assists and 5 steals for LCA.


ST. FRANCIS 88,
LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 44

The Lady Lions dropped a Region 6-A Private game at home Tuesday night.

St. Francis had a huge first half to open up a 51-28 halftime lead and cruised in the second half.

Joelle Snyder led Lakeview with 26 points. Sidney Corbin added 12 points for the Lady Lions.

Lakeview next will travel to Mt Pisgah on Friday.
