Fire damages restaurant and golf shop in Clayton

By AccessWDUN Staff

A building in Clayton which houses the Wildcat Grill restaurant and the Rabun County Golf Course Pro Shop was damaged in a structural fire on Dec. 23.

A press release from Rabun County Fire Services states crews first responded to the fire at 1322 Old 441 South just after 5:30 p.m.

Fire crews initially saw heavy black smoke showing from the basement of the building, which contains golf cart storage and the Golf Pro Shop. The Wildcat Grill operates on the main level of the building.

Restaurant workers were on the main level of the building at the time of the incident and went downstairs to investigate. The release states the workers saw a golf cart on fire.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, however, all of the contents in the basement were destroyed. The restaurant upstairs also suffered heat and smoke damage.

No injuries were reported in the fire.

The State Fire Marshall was called in to investigate, but the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. It appears that it may have started in one of the golf carts.
