Nicholson man arrested in Athens gang crackdown

By AccessWDUN Staff

Athens-Clarke County Police have arrested three more suspects in a gang crackdown, including a man from Nicholson.

The three additional gang arrests come less than a week after a previous announcement that the police department had arrested 10 suspects in a two-week timeframe.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported authorities seized 10 firearms, drugs and stolen property as part of the 13 arrests.

The three recent arrests include Jakwon Mapp, 23, of Nicholson, Taveon Rashawn Stevens, 24, of Athens and Kaderrick Atkinson, 24, of Athens.

Mapp was arrested for violating release conditions, as he was on federal pretrial release for a firearm-related charge.

Stevens was arrested Tuesday after an officer saw a Honda Pilot on West Broad Street that the officer knew was connected to Stevens. Stevens is believed to be a member of the Red Tape Gang.

Stevens barricaded himself inside an apartment after police noticed him walking away from the Honda Pilot. The Strategic Response Team negotiated with Stevens for about two hours before his eventual surrender.

Two women and several children were inside the apartment at the time, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

Police also found Atkinson inside the apartment, a member of the BBA gang.

Stevens was charged with obstruction as a result of the incident. However, he already had existing warrants for felony probation violation, trafficking in heroin and possession of cocaine, ecstasy and Xanax with intent to distribute. Stevens had previously bonded out of jail on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, trafficking heroin and other drug-related charges.

Stevens is on probation for violating the street gang act.

Atkinson is charged with obstruction, but he previously bonded out of jail for aggravated assault and three other misdemeanor charges.
