Crash survivor is airlifted to the hospital after his truck catches on fire

A victim of a vehicle accident in Rabun County suffered serious burns as a result of the crash. On Tuesday morning, around 11:45 a.m., a pickup truck that had gone off the roadway of Payne Hill Drive in Clayton went down an embankment and caught on fire. The driver inside was able to get out through his window, but his clothes were still on fire.

According to Justin Upchurch, assistant chief for Rabun County Fire Services, the local fire station had already been alerted about a vehicle fire and was on the scene to assist the driver. The emergency crews worked to remove the victim from the scene of the truck fire as quickly as possible. They were able to get him up the hill and request an emergency helicopter to treat his burns.

The patient was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta to be treated for his burns and other injuries related to the accident.

Upchurch did not identify the patient and says he does not have an update on the man’s condition at this time.
