Gaining the Edge: Dawson County's defense leads way in upset win over Sandy Creek

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. — Dawson County has been playing with a chip on its shoulder all season.

Why? They were counted out in the preseason and have used that as a rallying cry to improve week after week.

After falling to Cherokee Bluff, the Tigers have won three straight, including the biggest of them an upset 36-27 Class 3A first-round playoff win over No. 6 Sandy Creek at Tiger Stadium -- one of the biggest upsets across all classifications.

Sandy Creek had beaten No. 1 Cedar Grove the week before.

Dawson County used a slow but explosive offense and a steady blitzing defense to wreak havoc against Sandy Creek. Kenny Nelson picked off two passes and batted down another that could have been a touchdown to help the Tigers push past Sandy Creek.

The defense held the Patriots' offense 13 points under their average.  The Tiger defense is one of the main reasons the Tigers are playing Game 12 this week.
