Girls basketball: Johnson, Branch get opening wins

OAKWOOD — The Johnson girls opened their season with a big 59-33 win over rival West Hall on Friday at home.

Sarah Johnson recorded a double-double for the Lady Knights (1-0) with 18 points and 15 rebounds and added 6 steals as well.

Carleigh Odell added 10 points and Ashley Mintz had 9 points and 6 steals for Johnson.

Johnson held West Hall (0-1) to just 4 first quarter points and eventually ran out to a 26-13 halftime lead. The Lady Knights took a 47-22 lead into the fourth quarter.

Kaitlin Congiolosi led West Hall with 15 points, 11 coming in the second half. Mackenzie White added 9 points for the Lady Spartans.

Johnson next will travel to East Forsyth on Tuesday. West Hall travels to Flowery Branch on Tuesday.

The Lady Falcons opened their season with a dominating win.

The Flowery Branch defense held the Lady Wildcats to 10-points or less in every quarter. They led 10-4 after the first quarter and used a 19-10 second quarter to run out to a 29-14 halftime lead. An 18-9 third quarter gave them a 47-23 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Shaina Kriews paced the Lady falcons with 20 points. Alana Veiga and Jess Tamplin each added 10 points for Flowery Branch.

Flowery Branch next will take on West Hall on Tuesday at home.
