Softball: Dawson County blanks Tattnall; headed to Columbus

By Tim Whitmire

Dawson County softball coach Justin Rickett described his team as "tough as nails."

The No. 4 seeded Dawson County softball team upset No. 3 seed Tattnall County in Reidsville on Thursday, 3-0, to win the best of three series.

“These girls are tough as nails,” Rickett said. “So proud and happy for them.”

It is the Tigers' first trip to the quarterfinals since 2014. Dawson County remains the only Region 7-3A team alive after No. 1 seed East Forsyth lost in Game 3, 7-5, to Pierce County.

Reese Moore was almost untouchable, allowing five hits over the 27 batters faced, tossing 62 of her 88 pitches for strikes in the shutout.

Freshman Ace Cochran scored a run and drove in another while going 2-for-3 in the win.

Dawson County scored all they needed in the third off a Layne Bailey (3-for-4) RBI hit that scored Cochran. After Annslee Kirby’s (2-for-4) sixth inning hit, Cochran drove the first insurance run in the sixth to give Dawson a 2-0 lead.  Rylie Erickson earned a bases-loaded hit by a pitch that walked in Moore to finish the Tiger scoring.

Dawson County will play Region 2-3A No. 1 seed Pike County on Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Olympic Softball Complex in Columbus.
