GAINESVILLE — Chestatee rebounded from its first Region 8-4A loss last week to hold off East Hall 62-50 on Friday in a wild second-half shootout.
The War Eagles (3-3, 1-1 Region 8-4A) looked to be running away with the easy win, building a huge 42-7 lead early in the third quarter behind senior quarterback Luke Bornhorst.
The Vikings (1-6, 0-3 Region 8-4A) did not quit, however. East Hall, behind Clete Cooper, pulled within 55-42 midway through the fourth quarter using a 35-13 spurt to get back in the game.
Chestatee sealed the game when Christian Vargas broke loos on a 26-yard run for a touchdown with 2:26 remaining for a 60-42 lead before the Vikings scored again on a pass from Clete Cooper to Kahlil Jackson in the waning seconds.
The win for the War Eagles moved them into fourth place in the region standings, one-half game behind Cedar Shoals and one game ahead of Flowery Branch. They will travel to Madison County next week.
