Girls basketball: Dawson County explodes past Chestatee; Buford, Banks win; Rabun, Hab, Lakeview lose

DAWSONVILLE — Dawson County had four in double figures to break a two-game skid in a 70-43 win over Chestatee (9-9) on Monday at the Ford Phillips Center.

Madi Anglin paced Dawson County (8-7) with 15 points, while Ella Siuta and Macy Benson added 12. Abby Slaton's return after missing a couple of games was welcomed by her coach and teammates as she went for the double-double, 11 points and 13 rebounds.  hit for 11 points. 

"We needed this one," coach Eric Herrick said. "Finally getting everybody back, I mean, welcome back Abby Slaton. She goes for a double tonight and played her butt off today. She's been missing for the last couple of games, so we're so glad to have her back. We needed some momentum. Saturday night we had the best team in the region beat here and gave it away. So, we need to be able to close our and finish the game and get some momentum going into Lumpkin on Tuesday." 

The Lady Tigers opened the game on a 12-3 run, but Chestatee, thanks to Bowen Corley and Emma Easterwood, stayed within striking distance in the quarter, scoring back to back baskets to cut the lead 16-13. 

In the second quarter, the Tigers used a Benson two-point basket, a Slaton 3-pointer and a Morgan Chester deuce to go up 27-16, the largest lead of the game at that point.

Easterwood's 3-pointer was washed out as Anglin and Suita scored to give the Lady Tigers a 33-23 halftime lead. Eastwood finished with 14 points and Corley led the Lady War Eagles with 18 points. 

The third quarter was the pull away for the Lady Tigers. Slaton, Anglin, Siuta and Porter combined with a gritty defensive effort, push the game out of reach, 52-36, and the flurry continued in the final period. 

"We got some transition baskets, some easy stuff," Herrick said. "We turned our defense into offense. Madi Anglin was extremely active, so we picked some passes and went down and finish. The kids played hard. I thought they competed today."


NORTH FORSYTH 55,
RABUN COUNTY 50

Class 2A No. 1-ranked Rabun County (11-3) took Class 7A fifth-ranked, North Forsyth, down to the wire in the loss on Monday at Dawson County High School in Dawsonville. 

Ali Jones led the Lady Raiders (14-2) with 17 points, 15 from 3-point land, Haelim Adle had 15 points, and Maddie Erickson added 10 points. Gracie Deetz paced the Lady Wildcats with 12 points, while Lucy Hood tossed in 10. 

It was a game of runs as North Forsyth opened on an 11-5 spurt, eventually going ahead 19-10 by the end of the quarter. 

In the second, the Lady Raiders, on a 3-pointer from Jones, gained their largest lead of the half, 24-14, before the Lady Wildcats set out on a 7-2 run, cutting the Raider lead, 26-21 with 35 seconds left. But Jones swished a 3-pointer to break the Rabun and give the Lady Raiders a 29-21 lead. 

The second half was much of the same. Rabun's Hood scored the first five points of the third before Adle, Jones and Meredith Franklin scored three straight baskets, going up 37-26. Rabun County, didn't back down, though, scoring the next eight points to get within three points, 37-34, with 1:52 left.

The two traded baskets late and a North's Adle hit two foul shots with 8.7 seconds to go. The freebies gave North a 42-36 lead after the third quarter.

Rabun's Carley Haban basket to open the final period inched the Wildcats as close as they would get down the stretch, 41-38. North pushed ahead 52-40 late, Rabun ended the game on a 10-3 run.


BUFORD 54,
HABERSHAM CENTRAL 22

Ashyia Willis and Blair Wallis scored 11 each in the Region 8-6A win over the Lady Raiders in a makeup game on Monday. 

The Lady Wolves (13-0, 4-0 Region 8-6A) plays host to Lanier on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Lady Raiders (11-3, 3-2 Region 8-6A) travels to Central Gwinnett on Tuesday.


BANKS COUNTY 83,
LAKEVIEW 45

Banks County's Kamryn Grier had a career night scoring 36 points and grabbing 14 boards in the blowout win over Lakeview on Monday.

Grier was one of three Lady Leopards in double figures. Jenna Reeves poured in 20 points, and Addison Hoard had 14.

Joelle Snyder scored 23 points to lead the Lady Lions. Sara Nivens added 7 points and 8 rebounds, while Sidney Corbin pitched in 6 points and grabbed 4 boards.    

Banks County stormed to a 45-25 lead at half time.
