White County employees will receive cost of living adjustment

CLEVELAND – White County government employees can look forward to a 2.5% cost of living pay increase beginning Thursday, Oct. 1.

During Monday’s county commission work session and called meeting, Commission Chairman Travis Turner said back in May and June when commissioners were discussing the current budget, they committed to the employees they would look at possible cost of living raises after the county determined what impact the coronavirus pandemic would have on the budget.

"This is a follow-up on that promise," Turner said.

In a budget update, County Finance Director Jodi Ligon told commissioners she believed there were adequate funds to cover the $255,000 needed for the increases.

"We appreciate them bearing with us,” Turner said. “We had no idea what coming out of the pandemic in March, April and May. We issued a spending freeze. We had no idea and we are very thankful. We are very blessed to be in the financial shape we are as a county today and this is our way of reaching out to our employees, who are the boots on the ground, a simple way of saying thank you for your hard work.”
