Gwinnett County and Georgia officials urge customers to wear masks in stores

Gwinnett County Solicitor General Brian Whiteside and Georgia Retail Association Executive Director Thomas Beusse released a public service announcement in which they urge the public to wear masks in retail establishments.

Whiteside mentioned that some incidents, both nationally and locally, between customers and employees have escalated to the point of violence.

"In some instances, retail employees have even been assaulted," Whiteside said. "This behavior will not be tolerated."

Whiteside also said that any individual who assaults an employee as a result of being asked to comply with a retail establishment’s policies can be prosecuted. Each misdemeanor offense in Georgia can carry up to 12 months in jail or on probation and up to a $1000 fine.

Beusse encouraged all shoppers to wear a mask, follow CDC guidelines and follow state safety requirements and store policies.

"We realize this is a stressful time," Buesse said. "But we ask that customers please remain patient with us and each other."
