WATKINSVILLE — Athens Academy stuffed the usually-potent Commerce ground game in taking a 24-7 over the Tigers in a battle of ranked teams in Class A.

Commerce, ranked seventh in Class A-Public, never led as the Spartans, ranked second in Class A Private, jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first half. The Tigers answered Athens Academy's second score with a 98-yard TD return from Sammy Brown but that's the only score they could manage.

In the first half Commerce had just 58 total yards and only 41 on the ground in their vaunted triple-option.

Athens Academy then opened the second half with a scoring drive capped by a 10-yard TD pass fo a 21-7 lead. A Dru Hunt 33-yard field goal with 4:32 sealed the win for the Spartans.
