Young woman killed, boyfriend injured during hike at Cochran Falls

By AccessWDUN Staff

A hike in the Cochran Falls area of Dawson County turned tragic for a young couple Friday afternoon

Officials with Dawson County EMS held a press conference late Friday night to outline details of the incident.

They said a woman in her 20s was killed as she tried to leave the trail to find help for her boyfriend who had become injured during the hike. The Atlanta Journal Constitution said her body was found at the bottom of Cochran Falls just before 7:15 p.m.

Searchers found the man, also in his 20s, just before 6 p.m. He told them that his girlfriend had gone to find help for him and he had not seen her since. At last report, the man was hospitalized at Northeast Georgia Medical Center with head, neck and back injuries.

Authorities have not released the names of the couple. The investigation into the woman's death continues.

The deadly accident happened just one day after search teams found a missing hiker near the Len Foote Hike Inn Trail in Dawson County. That hiker left the trail and spent the night in the woods, but he was not injured.
