Section of Green Street to close Aug. 31

A section of Green Street between Washington and Spring streets will close for two weeks beginning August 31.

The closure is part of phase two of the city’s downtown streetscape improvements project, according to a press release from the City of Gainesville.

“They will be performing work within the street for utility improvements along Green Street,” said Gainesville Public Works Deputy Director Matt Tarver.

Motorists in the area should watch for construction equipment and crews during the closure. The section is expected to reopen on the morning of September 14.

The streetscape improvements project is an effort by the city to bring more visitors to the downtown area. City officials designed plans in 2017 to extend the streetscape in two places: along Washington and Spring streets to E.E. Butler Parkway and along Bradford Street to Academy Street.

Following improvements to Green Street, crews will move to Spring Street between E.E. Butler Parkway and Bradford Street. Updates to Bradford Street between Washington and Academy streets will be the final part of the project and take place after the first of the year.

Work on Washington, Spring and Green streets should be completed by February 2021. The entire streetscape improvements project is expected to be complete by summer 2021.
