Seven qualify for Nov. 3 Demorest special election

The City of Demorest will hold a special election Nov. 3 to fill two seats on the city council, and those seats have drawn more than a half-dozen qualifiers.

Shawn Allen, Keith Andrews, Matthew Crews, Russell C. Goldsmith, Amanda Crump Mason, Jerry R. Mobley and Jim Welborn qualified this week to run for the open seat left vacant by the resignation of Councilman Bruce Harkness and the seat that will be left open when Councilman Sean Moore moves out of the city later this year.

Moore, who has built a house in Cornelia, remains in office and lives in Demorest until his current house sells.

The two people elected to the seats will be able to take office after the election results are certified.

“It will be on or about Nov. 16 that they can take office,” said Habersham County Election Supervisor Laurel Ellison, who oversees elections for Demorest.
