Citing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, NHRA officials announced on Monday the cancellation of the upcoming Southern Nationals for the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia.
“NHRA made this difficult decision after exhaustive deliberation with track representatives, health officials and government authorities,” the NHRA said in a release on Monday afternoon.
The event, rescheduled to August 28-30 from its original May race date, was to celebrate its 40th anniversary. That anniversary race will be recognized in 2021, according to the release.
“It is with great regret that we announce the cancellation of the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway,” said Kasey Coler, vice president of track management and operations in the release. “This tough decision was made following numerous discussions with our stakeholders regarding the ability to host and celebrate the 40th anniversary of the race.
“Unfortunately, under the current circumstances, we would not be able to provide the event a proper platform to honor and celebrate this historic anniversary.”
According to the release, event ticket holders will receive more information via email. For more information, visit NHRA.com.
