Kemp takes action on multiple legislative measures

Governor Brian Kemp signed several bills into legislation today, including one that eliminates high-stakes testing for students.

A statement from Kemp’s office says there are hopes the bill will strengthen both teachers and students. “Georgia’s teachers are heroes in their communities, adapting to a quickly changing landscape in these uncertain times. We’re grateful for their dedication and hard work, and together, we’ll ensure a brighter future for the Peach State!”

He also signed a controversial proposal that adds additional protection for police officers. According to the AJC, critics are calling it a “messy tangle of legal problems.”

Kemp offered a rebuttal, saying, “’While some vilify, target and attack our men and women in uniform for personal or political gain, this legislation is a clear reminder that Georgia is a state that unapologetically backs the blue.’”

Civil rights groups raised concerns, calling it “hastily written” and that more time should have been given to evaluate better ways to increase police protections. The concern is that it could have unintended consequences.

Another measure Kemp signed into law today will prevent people from suing businesses or healthcare workers if they get COVID-19.

Four bills that were vetoed included the creation of a Healthcare Transparency and Accountability Oversight Committee and a proposal to begin the process of abolishing the Glynn County Police Department.
