GAINESVILLE — Evan Thompson of Athens fired a 7-under par 65 to take the lead after the opening round of the City Championship Friday at the Chattahoochee Golf Course.
Seven golfers finished at even par or better in the largest field in many years in the 54-hole tournament.
Thompson is five shots clear of Pep Brown, Wilson Baker, and Nathan Williams, who all are tied for second place after shooting rounds of 70. The 2019 champion, Grant Crowell, along with Drew Ridings, both shot 1-under 71's. Jim Foote and Sam Patterson both shot even par 72.
The tournament will continue Saturday and Sunday at Chattahoochee.
