The Sparks in the Park event in Sugar Hill, which had been delayed from the Fourth of July weekend to August due to the Coronavirus pandemic, has now been canceled.
Sugar Hill City Manager Paul Radford said officials made the decision due to the increase in Coronavirus cases in the area and the scale of the event. The city says the event draws over 10,000 people annually at E.E. Robinson Park North.
Radford said it was disappointing to cancel the event.
"We know that the community looks forward to this event yearly, but it is with the public health and safety of our community in mind that we make this difficult but responsible decision," Radford said.
The event is held every year on July 3, but event restrictions announced by Governor Brian Kemp had forced the city to postpone it to August 1. It normally features food, live entertainment and ends the night with a fireworks display.
Sugar Hill Mayor Steve Edwards said the city will shift its focus to the 2021 event.
“We look forward to continuing this community tradition with the 2021 version of Sparks in the Park that will be an unequaled, unrivaled and fun-filled event for all ages," Edwards said. "We are counting down the days until July 3rd, 2021, when we can gather together again to celebrate our country and our freedom.”
