The Hall County Board of Education will hold three public hearings later this month in light of a possible tax increase for FY21.
The Board on Wednesday announced plans to hold the millage rate at 17.55 mills, which is 0.881 mills of an increase over the rollback rate of 16.669 mills. Even with the millage rate unchanged, because of property assessments for the year, some property owners will see higher taxes. The taxes levied will depend on individual property assessments.
"Each year, the board of tax assessors is required to review the assessed value for property tax purposes of taxable property in the county," explained Stan Lewis, Director of Communications for Hall County Schools. "When the trend of prices on properties that have recently sold in the county indicate there has been an increase in the fair market value of any specific property, the board of tax assessors is required by law to re-determine the value of such property and adjust the assessment."
Since there is a potential for some property taxes to increase, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express opinions on the budget.
The hearings will be held over the course of seven days at the Hall County School District headquarters, located on Green Street in Gainesville.
The date and time for each hearing is as follows:
July 20, 2020 at 6 p.m.
July 27, 2020 at 11:30 a.m.
July 27, 2020 at 6 p.m.
The school district headquarters is located at 711 Green Street, Gainesville, Georgia, 30501.
