GBI investigating death of Lumpkin County inmate

By Bryan Pirkle Reporter

At the request of the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the apparent hanging death of a county jail inmate on Thursday.

GBI spokeswoman Natalie Ammons said Friday that Randall Thomas Hanley, 38, was found hanging in his jail cell at roughly 10:38 a.m. Thursday.

"Lumpkin County officers performed lifesaving measures and ultimately EMS transported Hanley to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:00 p.m.," Ammons explained.

Hanley, a Dahlonega resident, was originally taken into custody on a number of charges related to an alleged domestic violence incident. His case was pending trial after he was denied bond on June 18.

An autopsy has been scheduled for this Saturday at the GBI Crime Lab, although Ammons noted that a preliminary investigation indicates that Hanley died from self-inflicted hanging.
