An arrest warrant has now been obtained for a driver who collided head-on with a Forsyth County deputy. On Saturday, June 6, 40-year-old Deputy B.W. Abanto, from Cumming, was stopped on Post Road in the southbound turn lane when a Toyota Corolla crossed the center line and struck his police vehicle head-on.
Charges for Navarrete-Torries include a seat belt violation, for failing to maintain his lane, for driving without a valid license, for driving under the influence and for reckless driving.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, just prior to the accident a citizen called 9-1-1 to report Navarrete-Torres driving at a high rate of speed and passing vehicles in no-passing zones.
The driver and deputy were hospitalized after the collision, with both apparently suffering from minor injuries.
"A concerned citizen had just called in to report the erratic driving of the suspect when he hit DFC Abanto's patrol vehicle, which was stationary in the center turn lane," the post said. "Thankfully DFC Abanto received only minor injuries and will make a full recovery."
The investigation by the Georgia State Patrol remains open.
