Eastanollee man charged with sale of drugs leading to overdoses, death

A search warrant executed this week led to the arrest of an Eastanollee man investigators say sold drugs that resulted in the death of a Clarkesville woman May 19 and the overdoses of three other people.

Charles Detroy Mayfield is charged with possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I or II controlled substance; receipt, possession or transfer of a firearm by a convicted felon or felony first offender; possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies; possession with intent to distribute a Schedule III, IV or V controlled substance; and parole violation, Stephens County Detention Center records show.

The search warrant was executed by personnel from Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office Task Force and an investigator with Toccoa Police Department and happened late Tuesday at a home on Defoor Road in Eastanollee.

“Charles Mayfield was arrested in connection with the sale of drugs leading to the overdoses and death of Amanda Adams,” said Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize. “While executing the warrant in Eastanollee, a number of drugs and firearms were located at the residence.”

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. May 19, Toccoa police responded to a welfare check in a room at Quality Inn, 106 Stephens Circle, Toccoa, regarding a possible drug overdose.

When officers entered the room, they located four unconscious adults. Stephens County Emergency Medical Services, Toccoa Fire and first responders administered NARCAN to the victims quickly, but Adams, 37, of Clarkesville, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Stephens County Hospital.

The three remaining victims were admitted to the hospital.

Also located in the motel room was a 2-year-old juvenile sitting on one of the beds, Mize said. The child was removed from the scene and later reunited with family.

“Due to the nature of the overdose, all evidence is being processed at the GBI Crime Lab, along with the autopsy being completed at the medical examiner’s office,” Mize said.

All the charges against Mayfield are felonies, and he is being held on a $55,000 bond.

The ARDEO Task Force and GBI will continue to investigate the case, Mize said.

“The Toccoa Police Department would like to thank all the agents of the Task Force, GBI, Stephens County Sheriff’s Office and first responders for their time and dedication on this case.”
