Rain postpones NASCAR Cup Series at Charlotte to Thursday

By Brandon Reed Reporter

Mother Nature was the only winner in Wednesday night’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Wet weather has postponed the Alsco 500 at the 1.5 mile track in to Thursday night at 7 p.m.

The showers moved in over the Charlotte area around noon Wednesday, as the Carolinas were pelted with showers off of tropical storm Bertha.

The rains fell heavily over the Charlotte, Concord and Mooresville area, dumping several inches of precipitation as it rolled through.

In the end, the possible start time was just going to be too late in the night, leading NASCAR officials to postpone the race to Thursday night.

The starting lineup for the Alsco 500 was set by inverting the top 20 finishers from Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600, with the remaining spots determined by finishing position on Sunday.

When the race rolls off, William Byron will bring the field to the green flag from the pole, with Alex Bowman second, Michael McDowell third, Matt DiBenedetto fourth and John Hunter Nemechek fifth.

Aric Almirola, Austin Dillon, Joey Logano, Cole Custer and Erik Jones round out the top 10 starters.

Dawsonville, Georgia's Chase Elliott, who won Tuesday night’s NASCAR Gander Outdoor Truck Series race at Charlotte, starts 19th, with Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 winner, Brad Keselowski, starting 20th.

Jimmie Johnson, who was disqualified from Sunday's 600-mile event after failing post-race inspection, will start 40th, the last car in the starting field.
