Pedestrian identified after fatal wreck with SUV in Buford

A pedestrian was struck and killed in unincorporated Buford early Saturday morning and Gwinnett County Police identified the victim Tuesday morning.

Corporal Michelle Pihera said Tuesday that Young Woo Kim, 23, reportedly darted into the roadway and was struck by a Ford Escape.

"Initially, we did not have the identity of the pedestrian, he did not have any identification on him," said Pihera. "He was eventually taken to a local hospital and the hospital notified us that the following day, the pedestrian had died as a result of his injuries."

The incident happened on Level Creek Road near Cabot Creek Way.

Pihera said Kim may have been under the influence. "At this time, the driver of the Ford Escape is not going to be facing any criminal charges," she said, adding that the driver and the passenger in the car were not hurt in the accident.

Pihera said investigators still weren't sure why Kim was in the roadway, or why he was walking around. "There is some evidence to suggest he may have been under the influence of either alcohol or drugs, or both, and once the autopsy is done we'll be able get maybe a clearer picture as to why or how this incident occurred."
