Passenger hospitalized after train hits car in Gainesville Saturday

The passenger in a vehicle that was hit by a train in Gainesville over the weekend remains in stable condition at the hospital, at last report.

Gainesville Police Cpl. Jessica Van said the driver of the vehicle, an adult male, is facing a DUI charge.

"In reality, you don't make the best decisions while you are under the influence," said Van. "We don't have a timeframe of when the vehicle was stuck there, did they call 911, there are so many questions that are still yet to be answered."

Van said the driver and his passenger got stuck on the tracks between Bradford and Moreno Streets on Saturday night, with it appearing that the driver made a wrong turn and tried to drive through the gravel area between the two streets, getting stuck between the tracks.

"At that point, a train in motion struck the passenger side," said Van. "The passenger had to be transported, in stable condition, thank God."

It was not clear which train company was involved in the wreck, or if anyone on board was injured. Gainesville Police responded to the scene around 11 p.m. Saturday.

Van urged anyone who was out reveling on Memorial Day to think twice about driving intoxicated.

"This whole situation could have been avoided 100%."
