DNR: 14 BUIs issued on Lake Lanier so far this holiday weekend

By B.J. Williams

The weather has been sunny and warm and restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic have been eased, and those factors have translated to big numbers on Lake Lanier for Memorial Day weekend.

In numbers released Sunday night, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources reported 14 boating under the influence (BUI) arrests, the most of any other body of water in the state. A total of 27 BUIs were reported statewide Saturday and Sunday. Also on Lake Lanier, two boating incidents, both related to alcohol, were recorded by DNR rangers. One injury was reported, as well. DNR did not release specific details on the incidents.

So far, one drowning has been reported in Georgia over Memorial Day. The drowning occurred in the Brunswick area.

Two people drowned in Lake Lanier during the 2019 Memorial Day weekend.

The final day of the three-day weekend is Monday, May 25. Georgia DNR will report additional statistics late Monday night.
