Falcons decline fifth-year option on McKinley

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

The Atlanta Falcons will not move forward with a fifth-year option for Takk McKinley, according to a statement from the front office on Wednesday.

The statement said, "At this time we are taking a wait-and-see approach in terms of future contracts. Takk has shown the ability to produce at a high level and we look forward to his production in 2020."

The former UCLA Bruin was picked 27th overall in the 2017 draft, of which the Falcons traded up to get him.

Since then, McKinley has played in 45 games with 21 starts. But his production fell off in 2019. In his first two seasons, he had six and seven sacks. Last season, he only turned in 3.5.

The Falcons have worked in the offseason to improve the pass rush, signing Dante Fowler to a three-year, $48 million contract in free agency. Tyleler Davison and Allen Bailey were also resigned, and defensive end/tackle Marlon Davidson was taken in the second round of this year's NFL Draft.
