Banks County Commission votes to close government offices

In a pair of emergency meetings, the Banks County Commission has voted to close county offices except those related to emergency services and essential utilities.

In accordance with the governor’s executive order to shelter in place, Banks County Government offices are closed effective Friday, April 3, through Monday, April 13.

The motion to close government offices directed the county’s human resource officer to pay the employees’ wages “as per House Resolution 6201-18  Division E — Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act — EPSLA.”

The commission met first Thursday afternoon, then met Friday morning to correct required wording to ensure government reimbursement of wages.

Despite the office closures, Banks County 9-1-1/Emergency Management Agency, Banks County Fire/Emergency Medical Services, Banks County Sheriff’s Office/Jail, and Banks County Public Utilities will continue to operate to protect the safety of those in the county.

Constitutional officers will comply with judicial orders, said County Clerk Jenni Gailey. The commissioners’ office staff will work if necessary. The road department staff will work only if it is a public safety issue.
