Coronavirus: State's confirmed cases approach 2,500; death toll at 79

By AccessWDUN Staff

The number of deaths in Georgia attributed to the coronavirus is now 79, with nearly 2,500 confirmed cases statewide and 31 in Hall County.

That's according to the 7 p.m. report from the state Department of Health.

Since noon Saturday, the death toll increased by ten and the number of cases statewide by 80, with a total 2,446.  The number of cases in Hall County was unchanged.

Because of the scarcity of tests and a lag in results for tests already administered, infections in Georgia are higher than the state total.

The outbreak, on a per-capita basis, continued to be most severe in southwest Georgia. Dougherty County, which includes Albany, reported 224 cases. That's behind Fulton County's 378 cases and DeKalb County's 246 cases in total numbers. But on a per-capita basis, according to AP calculations made after the noon update on Saturday, Dougherty County has a confirmed infection rate that remains 10 times as high as the statewide numbers. Of the state's top 10 counties in per-capita infections, eight are in southwest Georgia.
