Cason cops Limited Late Model win in WBS opener

Dustin Cason opened up the 2020 race season at Georgia’s Winder-Barrow Speedway in dominating fashion on Saturday night.

Cason got out front early in the Limited Late Model feature, and held off a late challenge from Ken Lampp to score the season opening victory at the ¼-mile clay raceway.

The feature started with Lampp and John Anderson on the front row, with the two racing side-by-side through turn one. As they exited turn two, Lampp’s car spun in the bottom lane, bringing out the caution.

Without a lap being completed, the field was reset with Cason and Anderson on the front row. On the start, the duo battled through turns one and two, with Cason moving to the point down the backstretch. But the caution would fly again moments later when Anderson spun in turn three.

On the restart, Cason again asserted himself at the front of the field, with Nick Sellers in pursuit. Cason would pull away to a large advantage, leaving the field to battle behind him for position. That included Lampp, who was methodically working his way back into contention.

It looked like Cason might coast to the victory, but a late caution bunched up the field and brought Sellers and Lampp back into the battle.

Back under green, Cason moved to the lead while Lampp blasted past Sellers for second. With the white flag in the air, Lampp tried to close on the leader, but ran out of time as Cason swept under the checkered flag for the victory.

Lampp had to settle for second, with Sellers third, Anderson fourth and Shawn Tullis in fifth.

In other action, Chris Woods held off Chase Lampp for the win in the 602 Hobby feature. Nick Sellers finished in third, with James Nash in fourth.

Tyler Canup took top honors in the Modified Street feature, with Jimmy Lee Langley in second, Clayton Callaway in third, Aaron Criswell in fourth and Quik McCannon in fifth.

Ronnie Poole scored the victory in the Stock V8 feature, with Evan Brown, Mark Chancey, Shannon Duck and JR Carter rounding out the top five.

Glen Jackson was the winner in the Stock 4A feature, with Justin Taylor second, Matt Gerrin third and David Walker in fourth.

Derek Lord scored the Stock 4B feature win. James Ellenburg followed in second, with William Earnest third, Franklin Sargent fourth and Nathan Conner fifth.
