GAINESVILLE — The Gainesville boys and North Hall girls took big steps Monday in the opening round of the Hall County Championships to defending their titles

The Red Elephants fired a 13-over 157 at the Chattahoochee Golf Course to jump out to a 10-stroke lead over second-place Cherokee Bluff (167). North Hall (184), Lakeview Academy (189) and Riverside Military Academy (195) rounded out the top five after the first 9-holes.

Gainesville’s Zayne Hilderbrand Sam Patterson both shot 2-over par 38s to tie for the lead after the opening day.

For the girls, North Hall (126) holds a 19-shot lead over second-place Gainesville (145). Flowery Branch (146), West Hall (172), and Cherokee Bluff (194) sit in the top five with 9-holes left.

North Hall’s Mikayla Dubnik, the 2019 girls champion, carded a 1-under 35 and leads fellow Lady Trojan Lyric Sanford and West Hall’s Rachael DeVall by nine shots. Sanford and DeVall both shot 8-over 44 on the day.

The two-day tournament resumes Tuesday at Chattahoochee with a shotgun start slated for 4 p.m., weather permitting.
