Eight Gainesville High School students have been selected as semifinalists for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program.
Each is now in the running to be named as a state finalist. They are Caleb Anderson (Mathematics), William Gonzalez (World Language-Spanish), Ian Mallard (Engineering-Computer Programming), Mary Kate McCall (Communicative Arts), Quyen Ong (Science-Biology), Brisny Rodriguez-Flores (Social Studies), Elizabeth Stewart (Mathematics), and Marissa Woo (Communicative Arts of Theatre Performance).
Sponsored by the Governor’s Office of Achievement, the Governor’s Honors Program is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school students who will be rising juniors and seniors. The program offers instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders.
Approximately 650 finalists will be selected in early April; representing one-fourth of 1% of eligible sophomores and juniors in the state. The program will be held at Berry College in Rome. This will be the 57th edition of the program, making it the longest continually running program of its kind in the country.
As AccessWDUN reported earlier this month, 23 students from the high schools in the Hall County School System have been named semifinalists in the program.
