NEW SMYRNA, Fla. - Matt Hirschman’s 2020 New Smyrna Speedweeks can be described in one word – dominant.
The 37-year-old from Northampton, Pennsylvania led all but seven laps in the Richie Evans Memorial 100 on Friday night at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway, earning his second straight win in the event, fourth overall and second career World Series Tour-Type Modified division title.
The performance was unlike Hirschman, who’s known for saving his equipment while running mid-pack, but turns it on late and gets the big check. Ninety-three laps is among the most laps he’s led in a race that wound up with him in Victory Lane.
Hirschman also didn’t finish worse than third the entire week, garnering three runner-ups, a third-place and finally a victory. The former Tri Track Open Modified Series champion was on the losing side of the photo finish between himself and Anthony Nocella that had the racing world abuzz on Wednesday night.
Tyler Rypkema finished in second, with Craig Lutz third, Eric Goodale fourth and Eddie McCarthy in fifth.
Brett Meservey, Mike Willis, Jimmy Blewett, Anthony Sesely and JR Bertuccio rounded out the top 10.
In other action, Jamie Skinner won the 100 lap Pro-Late Model event – his third win of the week – and the division championship.
The 2020 World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing wraps up on Saturday night, with action from the Super Late Models, Modifieds, LKQ Super Stocks and NSS Trucks. For more information, visit NewSmyrnaSpeedway.org.
