Gainesville High School and several schools in the Hall County School System have been named 2020 AP Honor Schools, according to the state Department of Education.
“I commend the students, teachers, and staff of these 255 schools,” said State School Superintendent Richard Woods. “Behind this recognition is an enormous amount of hard work, and I congratulate all those who worked to expand access, improve performance, and build strong Advanced Placement programs in each school recognized.”
The 2020 AP Honor Schools are named in eight categories, based on the results of 2019 AP courses and exams.
GAINESVILLE
Gainesville High School earned distinction in AP STEM, AP STEM Achievement, and AP Access and Support. Seventeen Advanced Placement (AP) courses including the AP Capstone Diploma are offered at GHS; providing rigorous college-level instruction with equity of access to all students. Last year, 267 GHS students completed 465 AP exams with over 70% earning a score of 3 or more. The school’s AP program has produced 42 AP Scholars, 15 AP Scholars with distinction, 11 Capstone Diploma recipients, 5 AP Capstone certificates, and 3 National AP Scholars since offering AP course options.
“We are thrilled to be recognized as an AP STEM Honor School, AP STEM Achievement Honor School and AP Access and Support Honor School. These honors are only possible because of the hard work of our faculty and our students and the support of our families,” said GHS Principal Jamie Green. “We continue to look for ways to increase enrollment in early post-secondary opportunities and ensure that these opportunities are open to our entire student body. We remain fully committed to our mission to inspire, nurture, challenge, and prepare all students.”
HALL COUNTY
Several of the county's high schools are AP Honor Schools in more than one category.
AP exams are administered by the College Board, which also administers the SAT. AP courses are one of several ways Georgia students can access college-level rigor at the high school level; students who receive a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP exam are eligible to receive college credit.
