Hall County Animal Control officials reported the discovery of a rabid raccoon in the Flowery Branch area in recent days.
The raccoon and a dog had contact on Martin Road in Flowery Branch. Authorities shipped the raccoon to the Georgia Public Health Lab- Virology Section in Decatur and on Dec. 23, Hall County Animal Control received confirmation the raccoon tested positive for rabies.
Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid raccoon was located, according to animal control officials. Citizens who live in the area who see an animal acting abnormally should contact Hall County Animal Services at 770-531-6830. During non-working hours, citizens may call Hall County Dispatch at 770-536-8812.
Animal owners are encouraged to vaccinate their domesticated pets for rabies. Vaccines are available at the Hall County Animal Shelter, located at 1688 Barber Road in Gainesville, for $10 Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
