New public transportation begins in Gainesville

The new Hall County public transportation service WeGO begins Monday, December 14 within the city of Gainesville. The service will operate using a smartphone app, called WeGo, to schedule pick-up and drop-off locations.

The vehicles are vans that can hold 10-12 passengers at a time and they are equipped to meet special needs. All vans have ramps and spaces for two wheelchairs. The app also has special features for visually and hearing-impaired persons.

According to a previous report in November, The City of Gainesville was expecting to receive nine of its 15 WeGo rideshare vehicles by Dec. 1.

WeGo is operated by the city of Gainesville and is funded in partnership with Hall County Government, Georgia Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration. It will cost $3 for a one-way ride, with options to buy passes and get discounts if you purchase more rides in advance.

According to the Hall County Transit Bus Service website, the program is hoping to expand beyond the city limits through the county in the summer of 2021. For now, the vans will just be dropping off and picking up within the City of Gainesville.

Those who are not able to download the smartphone app can book a ride by phone.

Prior to this service, individuals had to book their rides several days in advance. This new service allows the vehicles to pick people up much quicker, often within minutes, and with an ease of convenience.

“It’s really nice to get the reaction where people go ‘Wow! The government’s trying to do something innovative and efficient, and new and modern,’” said City Manager Bryan Lackey at a City Council Work Session in November.

The WeGo service will be offered between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Services hours and days may increase in the future. WeGo will provide riders advance notice on any holiday-related schedule change.
