Doug Collins applauds recount efforts in Georgia

Congressman Doug Collins of Gainesville said he's glad Republicans asked for recounts of Georgia's ballots following the November General Election.

Collins made his comments Tuesday morning on WDUN's Morning Talk, with Al Gainey filling in as host.

"It's about making sure our elections are fair and safe and the right votes are counted," said Collins.

Collins told Gainey the election recount is in the litigation phase, following the certification that happened last Friday. Collins said the recount found at least 3,000 legal ballots that had not been counted.

He said it was also important to have the recounts accurate ahead of the January 5 run-off. Republican incumbent Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue are both fighting to keep their Senate seats.

"The secretary of state is now looking into, we found out this morning, over 250 possibilities of voter irregularities," Collins said.

Collins said when Democrats like Andrew Yang started saying they would move to Georgia so they could vote in our elections, he said while it would be easy to trace, the legislature should look at residency requirements.

"I think that's going to be the issue, is how are we going to make sure these people, or bring to light that these people are actually going to stay in Georgia when they move here," he said. "But the penalties are stiff, it is a felony, so if people want to risk doing that for this vote, I highly recommend they don't do that."

Collins added he knew state and local district attorneys as well as elections officials would be keeping close eyes on the potential for fraud among newly-moved and registered voters.

Collins said the reality is the session that begins in January will have to address election issues, whether they want to or not. And, he encouraged conservatives to do their part in the community.

"They've got to get engaged back in the fight in the real world, tacticle level," Collins said. "Sometimes we think we've got the best ideas but we've got to actually be out there registering voters, getting people and convincing people again on why Georgia is a conservative state, why it's so good and that's gotta come from those of us who are fighting those battles for years."
