ADAIRSVILLE — Dawson County outscored Adairsville 24-7 in the second half en route to a 45-31 win in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs on Friday.
The game, however, was actually a tale of two halves.
The Tigers (6-5 Region 7-3A No. 3 seed) jumped out to a 21-3 lead -- a 10-yard pass for Zach Holtzclaw to Max Moon, a Holtzclaw one-yard run and a Conley Dyer 40-yard run, in the first half, but Adairsville rallied back with three second-quarter touchdowns to take a 24-21 lead at the half.
In the second half, Dyer continued his career night with a 39-yard scoring run with 10:29 to go in the third quarter, and three minutes later, Holtzclaw launched a 75-yard scoring strike to Dakotah Sonnichsen, pushing the Tigers ahead 35-24 with 7:20 to go in the third.
Caleb Bonesteel added an 18-yard field goal late in the quarter, while Adairsville added its final score with 11:33 left in the contest.
Dawson County defensive lineman scooped up an Adairsville (6-4 Region 6-3A No. 2 seed) fumble and rambled 40 yards for the Tigers' final score.
Dawson County will travel to Oconee County on Friday. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
