Legends racers tackle twists, turns of AMS road course

By Dustin Bixby

HAMPTON, Ga. - Competitors in the AMS Legends program are used to racing fender-to-fender on Atlanta Motor Speedway’s challenging ¼-mile oval, but on Saturday they faced an entirely different challenge.

The fall series of racing switched things up by tasking racers and their crews to find the fastest way to navigate left and right turns through the Speedway’s infield road course.

A lap on this highly-technical circuit begins on the familiar frontstretch of the Thunder Ring, but instead of taking the sharp left hand turn on the ¼-mile, racers continued a bit further to take a sweeping left hand corner into the infield just beyond the turn 1 scoring pylon. Once in the infield racers were greeted by their first of several right hand turns on the circuit, sending them into a series of esses that run by the main tunnel and onto a long back straightaway.

A hard braking zone, two 90-degree left turns, and a fast, sweeping right hand bend leads competitors out of the infield. A hard right hand turn navigates racers back onto the backstretch of the 1/4-mile oval and into the final left hand turn back to the start-finish line.

A victory on a road course is often a source of pride for Legends and Bandolero racers. Among those leaving the twists and turns of the road course satisfied were 2020 Thursday Thunder Pro champion Caleb Heady and longtime Legends competitor Doug Stevens, who each put together consistently fast laps en-route to victory.

Blaze Crawford, the 2020 Thursday Thunder Semi-Pro champion, added a road course triumph to his list of accomplishments this year. Donovan Strauss and Preston Tatro each had an impressive showing on Saturday en-route to victories in the Outlaws and Young Lions divisions, respectively.

Garrett Gumm took the checkered flag after a flawless race in the Bandits class and Sebastain Asztalos took home the hardware from the Rookie Bandoleros.
