NASCAR Cup Series at Texas delayed to Tuesday by weather

By Brandon Reed Reporter

Race and track officials tried all day, but in the end, Mother Nature won out as wet weather has pushed the NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway to Tuesday.

The race, interrupted 52 laps in on Sunday afternoon, will now resume at 12 noon EST on Tuesday.

The weather was a moving target all day Monday, with periods of mist and fog rolling in around the 1.44-mile Forth Worth, Texas facility.  Things were looking promising late in the afternoon, but a final round of mist moved through, leading officials to call it a day, with an eye on Tuesday.

While there was been no heavy rain, the persistent mist and fog, couple with temperatures around 40 degrees, hampered efforts throughout the day to get the track race ready.

NASCAR is hoping to resume the race Tuesday, as the weather for the Fort Worth area calls for cold temperatures and a 70-percent chance of rain over the next two days.  With a race slated for Sunday at Martinsville, Virginia and the following Sunday at Phoenix - the season finale - the prospect of having to reschedule the event could prove to be a daunting task.

Mist and fog moved in over the track as Sunday’s race began, and increased over the first 43 laps, leading NASCAR officials to put out the caution flag.

About 10 laps later, the race was put under the red flag to allow track officials to try to dry the racing surface.  But the mist turned into rain, and just before 9 pm Sunday night, the call was made to push the remainder of the race to Monday morning.

But those rains continued to fall on Monday, again delaying the resumption of the race.

When the race restarts, Clint Bowyer will be the leader, with Jimmie Johnson second, Erik Jones third, Joey Logano fourth and Martin Truex, Jr. in fifth.

Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Austin Dillon, Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch rounded out the top 10 at the time of the red flag.
